In The Shadows: Ramla Ali’s Story Steps Into the Ring at the BFI London Film Festival

Note: This project was completed by Jessica Moran under our previous brand, Film & TV Clearances. We are proud to continue supporting award-winning talent as The Media Rights Collective.

The Media Rights Collective is delighted to congratulate the team behind In The Shadows, which receives its world premiere at the 70th BFI London Film Festival on Friday 9 October, ahead of a UK cinema release on 30 October through True Brit.

Directed by BAFTA and Emmy-winning filmmaker Anthony Wonke and written by Ursula Rani Sarma, In The Shadows tells the remarkable true story of Ramla Ali, who arrived in Britain as a refugee from the Somali Civil War and — at first without her family’s knowledge — fought her way to national amateur titles and on to become the first boxer ever to represent Somalia at an Olympic Games. BAFTA winner Jasmine Jobson (Top Boy) stars as Ramla, alongside Finn Cole and Gershwyn Eustache Jnr. The film is produced by Lee Magiday for Sleeper Films and Madeleine Sanderson for Affine Films, with Ramla Ali herself serving as executive producer.

FROM FIRST BELL TO FINAL CUT

A biopic of a living sporting pioneer touches the real world at every turn: real people, real bouts, real institutions, and the brands, archive and imagery that come with them. The Media Rights Collective was privileged to support In The Shadows across the whole of that journey, providing the Script Clearance Report, Production Clearances, and Post Production Clearances and Compliance Watches — identifying the risks while the story was still on the page, clearing what the cameras captured during the shoot, and running the final compliance passes on the finished cut. It is the full script-to-screen service: keeping a film legally robust without compromising its creative ambition, and delivering the clearance record that financiers and E&O insurers expect.

This one holds a special place for us — a story that deserves the big screen, and a team we are proud to work with time and again. Warmest congratulations to Anthony Wonke, Ursula Rani Sarma, Jasmine Jobson, Ramla Ali, and to Lee Magiday, Madeleine Sanderson and everyone at Sleeper Films and Affine Films. Enjoy Friday night — you have earned it.
